I actually do remember the attempted rape, and the entire season that led up to it, including Buffy’s actions and how fucked up the relationship as a whole was at that time.
I also remember the look on his face when he realized what’d he done, the immense guilt, the fact that he sought out his soul for her, and in the end sacrificed his life for redemption.
But hey, Angel he…couldn’t be bothered to find out if there were strings attached to his curse in like a hundred years and helped he kill that snake. Epic. Really epic.
(By epic I mean overly dramatic and highschoolish)

Hii! You’re my new favorite person. <3
Comparing Buffy/Angel and Buffy/Spike is absurd, since Buffy/Spike was all about hurting each other that season, and Buffy/Angel was FAR more brutal. Angelus (for whom Angel ALWAYS takes responsibility and acknowledges was him) tortured and killed Buffy’s friends and family. Spike and Buffy were two very damaged people at the time, and Spike finally lost control. It wasn’t right, but it certainly wasn’t Angelus.
Besides, elevating one ship because of a traumatic incident in another’s? Doesn’t work. And if we’re playing it that way, everybody go ship Buffy/Riley now. </soapbox>
